The vast outer space is an occasion for many inspirations. There is hardly a person who is not captivated by the power of exploding stars, the darkness of forming black holes, and the magic of death and creation about which we still know so little. For those of us who like to mentally soar through these not-yet-well-explored territories, music is a special means of teleportation—both when it comes to creating and listening to such sounds , by immersion in the magic of ethereal voices like the one of Heike Langhans, which we know well from projects like ISON, Draconian and Light Field Reverie.
When I heard the name of the artist’s new creative project – Remina, led by her and Mike Lamb (Sojourner, Light Field Reverie), my first thought immediately drifted to the popular sci-fi manga “Remina” (Junji Ito). I’m definitely curious if there’s a connection between the two, as aside from this interesting coincidence, I was also wondering if I’d hear something new and how different it would be from anything I’ve heard from the two musicians to date. Over the years, Heike Langhans manages to perfectly select the projects in which she participates, putting in each of them from her own traditional melancholy and ethereal reverberations in a magical way.
“Strata”, Remina’s debut album, sounds like the soundtrack to a
favorite sci-fi movie. Beautiful soaring vocals echoing through the
space, vocalizing their deep messages, inspired in the words of the
musicians themselves by their favorite titles ‘Blame!’ by Tsutomu
Nihei, ‘The Expanse’ and the movie ‘Sunshine’.
Along with them, a cinematic instrumental captivates us, evoking
different pictures in the mind – pictures of distant planets and
asteroids floating among cosmic dust.
Music inspired by supernovae and the ghosts of vanished planets. Doom metal in a whole new light, carrying a sense of soaring in space, a sense of liberation from the shackles of your own earthly shell. “Strata” is an experience of the senses – provocative and ethereal, opening up new territories in front of the listener, creating sights from the farthest corners of the cosmic abyss.
