The occult has always been an incredible enigma to the human mind. The secrets of the world beyond its visible contours, the unknown divine forces and the possibility to touch them through our smoky rituals and insight into and beyond ourselves – all this is a concept that has been explored since the very birth of the world.
The Radiant Light is a new folk project created by C.V.B., who we know well from the occult scene through his work with the bands Wolvennest, Cult of Erinyes, Aerdryk, LVTHN, Monads and others. Each one of them – dark, posessive, dwelling in what is hiding behind the veil.
The first manifestation of The Radiant Light is called ‘How to
Leave This World in Peace’ and is a concept album based on the
belief that wisdom is the key to understanding life, death and the
last moments before we fall into the unknown.
Although a solo project, The Radiant Light’s debut title features
the vocals of Shazzula (Wolvennest) on the title track, Déhà and
his bass on ‘Cult of Indifference’ and Bones (Dread Sovereign) and
his guitars alternating with those of Corvus in several of the
pieces.
The album opens with the almost two-minute intro song “Uncreation” and the drawn-out psychedelic atmosphere that can be felt when opening an old music box while standing in an abandoned dark room with broken windows, dusty curtains and ghosts hovering in the background. A two minute intro that profoundly sets the tone for ‘How to Leave This World in Peace’.
C.V.B.’s fathomless voice continues this sense of deep melancholy and ghostly presence with the second track, ‘The Portal’, with the female backing vocals complementing like a beautiful pale shadow every nuance, and the ambient sounds and noises adding more and more to a dark picture gradually unfolding before the listener .
Acoustic guitars, mellotron melodies and sound of hammonds, deep bass and dancing bluesy guitars… all the instruments intertwine in a distant and dimly lit atmosphere that takes you through time and smoothly guides you in a dark, at times even spine-chilling direction .
I would describe ‘How to Leave This World in Peace’ as a
cinematic experience. The title evokes visuals through its
combination of instruments, sounds and vocals. It’s not the typical
album that you’ll just listen to and like how it sounds, but it’s
one of those albums where you might go numb for a moment and just
listen in rapture.
The debut of The Radiant Light is capable of moving you into
a specific state of trance if you allow it to tear you away from
reality and walk you through the desolate shadowy paths of
melancholy, in search of the rays of wisdom.
