As part of the Greek metal triumvirate, NIGHTFALL are proven
artists with several truly significant works under their belt. Over
the years, the band has undergone a number of metamorphoses,
ultimately returning to their
more extreme sound in 2021 with “At Night We Prey”, after a
long hiatus. NIGHTFALL’s music combines melodic black metal with
death metal, gothic, and doom metal influences, resulting in their
own unique symbiosis of quality sound.
But it’s not just about music when it comes to these Helenic pioneers. During Nightfall’s most recent hiatus, lead vocalist Efthimis was diagnosed with depression. Now, he wears a black mask to cover half of his face, symbolizing the experience of living under the invisible veil of mental illness. This moment of personal struggle has led the band to launch an initiative called Metal Music Against Depression (MMaD), which is supported by the European Alliance Against Depression in Germany. Nightfall comes with a profound message for their audience: Everyone faces struggles from time to time. Understanding and compassion are values we must strive for.
With this strong message in mind, their new album “Children of Eve” is a work full of nuance, containing ten relatively short tracks. Its opening with the song “I Hate” dives into a cinematic, dramatic atmosphere with a certain fantasy feeling. The captivating opening monologue transitions into a guttural, defiant call, accompanied by fast instrumentation. Orchestral elements appear in the background, alongside female chants. The song is about reclaiming personal strength and seeking vengeance against all forms of oppression. It takes aim at the consistent influence of organized religion and the hatred of its hypocrisy.
“My name, my body are made of stardust
Courageous and thirsty
I am here to fight for blood.”
The album’s core is defined by furious tracks, featuring beautiful riffs with Floyd Rose tremolo and many other interesting accents, complemented by manic vocals that deliver raw poetry in each song. Tracks like “Inside My Head” delve deep into the essence of stigmas and oppression, evoking a sense of agony, while others like “Seeking Revenge” are drenched in fiery anger and explore the theme of inner turmoil. In some songs, like “With Outlandish Desire To Disobey”, female voices blend with the harsh male vocals in a way that highlights contrast, creating a pleasant dynamic. The song once again stands as a symbol of rebellion and pure hatred towards oppression and false dogma, exploring the misfortunes of mankind on a deeper level —central themes that pulse throughout the album.
“Children of Eve” channels relentless energy and a profound exploration of inner strength and personal depth. With captivating melodies and ferocious vocal delivery, the album stands as yet another jewel in Nightfall’s crown—undeniably worth delving into.
